It started out full of beautiful writing and painting an idyllic picture of a rural 1960s childhood with various family extensions, but around the time she turned 15 it went to a weird Judy Blume place Just way too much distasteful focus on discovering her body, as encouraged by her mother and including oddly frank discussions about it Otherwise, I really liked the way the author handled the topics of the grandmother s judgment from sterner generations, the fostering of her orphaned 5 year old cousin did I cry a little bit when he said he followed Mandy around because he wanted a mommy, one who isn t the age where people can die I surely did , and in particular, the mother s recurring cancer I also thought that having the story structured into five parts and detailing summers only, letting the school year happen off screen with only minor recapping, was a fantastic way to showcase the changes in her maturity.

I can t believe there isn t a single rating for this book I remember reading it when I was 12 or so, and bits of it really stuck with me, so it must have had something going for it.
