The Armistice 11 11 1918 You know, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Yes, the War is over But not for everyone There is some cleaning up to do in the Balkans The eponymous Captain Conan adds this perspective To night they ll be fighting the war all over again in the drawing rooms Oh, what a time we ve had, Princess If you could only have seen us at Salonika, telephoning orders and then countermanding them Just getting a battalion tied up into black knots you ve no idea all the work it gave us That sort of thing makes me spit blood, I tell you The main voice we hear though, our narrator, is Andr Norbert, a conscript not a regular He is a man of conscience Though not a lawyer, he is asked to defend three men up on charges He acquits himself and his clients well, so well that he is made the judge advocate This novel tells a contrapuntal tale of Norbert s relationship to Captain Conan Conan, for lack of a better word, is a killer, and he was amply honored for that skill as a soldier But now there is an inchoate peace and liquor and Bulgarian woman in a bartering mood Look here, he said, what s going to become of fellows who are no good for anything but fighting, and who ve found it out And so, Norbert and Conan Conan and Norbert Buffers against the martinet They learn, as do we, that a case is not a simple thing Eventually they will grapple with the case of a deserter, a traitor perhaps, but certainly a coward What is to be done __________________________________I planned, this year, to read novels written by authors from the various participant countries in World War I I stole the idea from a Goodreads friend and then sold it to real life friends who made it our yearly project One such friend gave me this book as a present I already had a French book or two so I kind of set this aside A sense of obligation made me pick it up And you know something I think this is exactly what I was looking for.

An interesting story I saw the movie about ten years ago, and always wanted to read the book An intriguing portrayal of what war can do to people, and also how some men grow in war, and can t adjust to its end This topic was touched on by Remarque in his book, The Road Back, also Conan is a fascinating combination of ruthless warrior and clever peasant He despises all the desk bound soldiers in the story, but adamantly defends the coward Erlaine Only heroes truly understand fear, he says I was fascinated by the characters in this book read it in one day, almost in one sitting.
