This isn t a book that you just read You read a section, do the assignments in that section, then meet weekly with a small group of other Christian men or women groups are divided up by gender called a Change Group to discuss what you learned If you go through the entire book, it takes about six months of weekly meetings Change Groups are essentially free group therapy The premise of the book is to answer Paul s question from Romans 7, Why do I do the very thing I don t want to do Everyone starts the group with that thing in mind It can be an addiction or a bad habit or character flaw Then as a group, we explore why we can t overcome it What are benefits from continuing to do it What are our false beliefs surrounding it Once we dig deep and answer some of these questions, we find the ability, combined with prayer and the support of our change group, to stop doing what we don t want to be doing It s a beautiful process I love how the focus is on God revealing to us what he wants us to change and him giving us the ability to do so and draw closer to him The other people in the change group aren t allowed to give each other any advice We can only ask thought provoking questions provided in the book We really do our own healing with God s guidance.
