April Reynolds travels to Arizona Territory in 1886, pretending that she has been hired to tutor a few children Her real intentions, however, are to locate the Lost Dutchman Mine, inform her crooked fiance about where it is, and then rob the owner blind But, along the way, she falls in love with Mandy Wells, the one person in town who might know where the Lost Dutchman Mine is located.I really wanted to enjoy this book Not many lesbian romances non contemporary, and historical western romances seem to be quite lacking in lesbian publishing right now Plus I was looking forward to reading about the discrimination that Mandy and April faced, and how they managed to stay together as a couple and keep themselves hidden from people who would surely condemn them for being lesbians.Except that isn t the story I got.First off, I have to say that the characters are two dimensional The entire story is told from April s perspective, which automatically gives us little insight into the other characters Not that I imagine much is there April is vapid enough And April s nefarious fiance is over the top evil he doesn t seem like he could be a real person at all He seems like a vaudeville villain, standing on the edge of the stage twirling his mustache in the shadows.Everything is also resolved quickly and without little conflict Once April finds herself stranded in Arizona this is all part of the ploy to gain Mandy s trust, which will hopefully lead to Mandy telling April where the mine is located , Mandy quickly offers her shelter at her own ranch April s fiance conveniently dies, taking with them the secrets of April s initial intentions And who needs to worry about money view spoiler It turns out that Mandy has been collecting money from the Lost Dutchman Mine for years, so they have than enough to live on for the rest of their lives hide spoiler
