There isn t really much story to these pop up, picture books by Rigaud and Boisrobert However, if I d encountered this when I was five My little head would have exploded I would have been all over this book Pop up books and books with cut outs in them are probably the most engaging of most picture books to children, and I think this book builds upon that It is a visually stunning book, as well as stupendously well crafted It s not the sort of pop up book you can look it once you have to look closer to see all the details both above and below the surface.

This is a really fun book that caught my eye when it passed through the library to fill a hold The pop up mechanisms are fairly simple, but they are very effective I especially love the way the images portray depth, both in the vertical sense, and as depth of vision Each page features a piece of paper that sticks out from the page, representing the surface of the water, and then other pieces stick up from this boats, islands, icebergs , while other pieces project below fish, whales, coral, icebergs , and sometimes pieces cut through the surface in interesting ways, like a small gray triangle above the water which is revealed as the tip of a giant whale beneath There are often layers of these pieces creating literal fore , middle , and backgrounds, an effect that is especially striking for the underwater components It is like having a whole series of highly detailed dioramas compressed into a single book I only wish that there were pages to the book, and perhaps that there was to the story than essentially the boat went to this place and saw this, then to this other place and saw this other thing but then, it isn t really about the story anyway.

Boisrobert has quickly become my favorite pop up book creator Her books are both beautiful and have a lesson to be learned Under the Ocean is all about the water, and how beautiful it is and how we should preserve it But what makes this book particularly brilliant is its originality When you turn each page, you see what s happening above the water, but as you fold the page further open you discover what s happening underneath Brilliant, colorful and all kinds of wonderful
