It s been a long time since I ve found a writer with a natural narrative voice You can enjoy many, many books because the stories are great and you really like the style, but that s a different thing This is the easy, smooth flow of words that only comes from writers who have the gift of natural storytelling in them Whether or not it s true for the author or not, for the reader it feels as if it must be something that writer does without thought, like breathing or some sort of magic Once you find it in one author you despair of finding it in many others because you can feel how rare and very satisfying the writing really is Well, if Winter s Heart is any indication, Mr Kanuckel seems to have this gift and I hope he keeps on sharing it with us.In Winter s Heart we meet Steven Boughmount and his friend Glen Tillson, two hunters who have the unique fortune of having guard duty the night a band of unusual goblins come from the woods and attempt to attack the walls of their village In a flurry of gunfire and slashing blades the goblins are dispatched and their improbable bounty is revealed The two men both good hunters but far from rich from their work are soon tempted to keep their spoils instead of turning them over to their Guildmaster Mr Ashley Temptation soon proves itself quite powerful and the men choose to make the attempt which results in both a long and fruitless trip to barter a rare object and soon after, confrontation by Mr Ashley In order to avoid the ultimate penalty of being kicked out of the guild and likely either killed or chased out of town the pair take up Ashley s quest to go into the unknown land of Hekton, an abandoned treetop city said to be laden with treasure and overrun with trolls While Glenn is a single man beholden to no one but himself, Steven is the father of four sons and the husband of a very lovely wife named Heather who would suffer greatly if he failed his quest With that and thoughts of a good Christmas in mind Steven sets out with his friend Glenn to face a challenge that neither can truly envision There is far to this story but I don t want to spoil too much of it Steven and Glenn s world while set in a rural fantasy is truly set in a distant future where man has not only destroyed civilization but left it utterly changed because of his greed and lack of forethought Rather than great cities these people live in the walled villages of a bygone day surrealy peppered with bits and pieces of the world that went before Man is now faced with strange cousins in goblins, trolls, dwarves, gnomes and pertmihn some of them good and others bad He is led by various gods and for some, like Steven, the man Jesus In many ways their simple lives are better but in others, like corruption, the world hasn t changed very much I loved Winter s Heart because it was very easy to identify with the characters and their plight, to enjoy the sense of adventure and conflict and to envision a world that could very well end up like this if our world let it It s also peopled with characters with true dimension and strength the female leads Heather and later Makwin, a beautiful dwarven maiden, are excellent examples of this facing the consequences of their own actions and of those around them Here you won t be stuck with impossibly perfect characters or terribly and improbably flawed ones who could never truly have lived Instead we have very human and down to earth people dealing with situations beyond their control but which are within the realm of our own plights like poverty, loss and a desire to transcend the life our father s lived before us At it s heart it s truly the tale of one man and his family facing the world and doing their very best to fight for their survival, a story I and, I m sure many others, can certainly benefit from.

This is how stories should be told beautiful, heart wrenching, making the reader completely lost within the pages It s been a while since I read this book but it still resonates as a book, that for me, is how fantasy should be written.

This is the third book I have read by this author and as usual I was drawn into a magical world that forced me to want to know about the characters and world being presented Mr Kanuckel is a true story teller and his descriptions are unique and always spot on I don t grow weary of his phrases as I do of many other books lately which seem to just peddle the same literary wares all the time The adventures are thrilling, the love is touching, the cruelty is intense and the reality brutal Altogether a brilliantly prepared piece of work that has the breath of real fantasy breathed into it The only thing that bothers me is a personal matter about profanity and some rougher scenes that normally cause me to reject a book This story follows the adventures of Steven Boughmount and his friend Glen as they are sent on a perilous journey Their actions have far reaching effects and a series of events is put into motion that neither ever expected, involving their loved ones as well There is loss and love, anger and war all mixed together in a brilliant tale I can t wait for the next installment.

What a great adventure I love how the story flits from one group of people to another Fear not, it only does this a few times, but for me, I like lots of things going on Firstly, this is a great unique tale Great characters, both good and bad with a few fantasy creatures thrown in for fun I felt that about three quarters of the way through, the author had rushed it a bit and some of the sentences were a bit disjointed However, the last quarter, the author got the plot back on track again, so all was well Recommended if you re a fantasy adventure fan.

Wonderful Kept me fascinated, I love some of these apocalyptic tales, and enjoy trying to figure out from a description of what something technological might have been, in regards to how it looks to someone who has never seen it My only complaint is that the end seems to slam into you suddenly.after a long journey for both, bam, they re home, no mention of how, how long, etc, they are quite simply there No mention Paul s abilities, or the changes wrought on the children This could have been another book entirely.
