(FLW = Frank Lloyd Wright) This was a very interesting book for me as it detailed the layers that FLW created to allow Fallingwater to be built on 2-3 boulders that the waterfalls existed near. Edgar Kaufmann, his wife, and his son "Jr." lived in this creation: "Fallingwater is FLW's poem to nature".

FLW had a few design preferences and pet peeves: He liked to recess, minimize or hide the entrance door to his creations; he abhorred garages, attics and basements; and blending his creations in with their surroundings was a specialty he evolved into.

Also of interest in this book was the documented interaction between FLW and the Kaufmann's as they bantered with their "country retreat" house, as well as the interaction between FLW and the local engineers because FLW's main base was at Taliesan east in SW Wisconsin.

It's amazing to me that the Kaufmanns donated it to the Western PA Conservancy District, but when the cantilevered terrace settled down, they came to realize the upkeep was too much for them (and they had a true art and civic sensibility so they felt it should be seen by as many people as possible).

Additional FLW structures are in Buffalo (per folks from Buffalo that we met on the Fallingwater tour), Springfield has one, Oak Park, IL, and the FLW's masterpiece after 41 years of working as an architect, Fallingwater in western Pennsylvania.

And there is a newly-restored FLW structure in Springfield and I intend to go there, possibly this summer, to check it out!

Edgar is the son of the Kaufmanns who commissioned Wright's Magnum Opus. He's lived with this house most of his life. Insightful take on this most famous of "Modernist" masterpieces.
