This book contains a number of stories previously published in various magazines and newspapers, all gleaned from the author s personal experience of the island of New Guinea and its peoples Ruhen was a New Zealand born writer and journalist who published a wide variety of interesting books this has to be one of the unique ones, as still in the 1950s, and indeed the 1960s, stone age tribespeople were being encountered for the first time in various parts of the island This work provides a very good background to New Guinea from first hand reports.

This book contains descriptions of New Guinea up through the 1940 s There are sections on its history and on the implications of different beliefs of the people There are also short stories, presumably true, about life in New Guinea from the standpoint of natives, missionaries, government officials, and traders Very interesting and rewarding.
